Many people have asked me what Reiki is. In a nutshell, it is a natural healing method that is thousands of years old. It heals on all levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Reiki comes from Japanese Kanji, which means Universal Life Force. Rei means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki means “life force energy.”
Christian Minister, Dr. Mikao Usui, rediscovered this technique in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Dr. Usui understood the Bible on an intellectual level but wanted to understand how Christ was able to heal people. His journey for enlightenment led him to discover that Buddha had also healed the sick. He embarked on a mission to learn as much as he could about Japanese and Chinese translations of Buddhist scriptures. His meditations led him to learn Sanskrit, which enabled him to unravel Buddhist writings that had never been translated into another language. From those writings, he discovered the knowledge of symbols and description of how Buddha healed people. Further meditations allowed him to access his ability to apply that knowledge and actually heal others.
Reiki is a natural way to help reduce stress and promote healing in all areas of your mind and body. It is safe to practice on children, adults and pets.
A Reiki session consists of the recipient lying on a treatment table while fully clothed. Light touch is administered to specific areas of the body that include the head, neck, shoulders and limbs. All sessions vary in time depending on the individual needs of the client but typically last 30 to 60 minutes. Receiving Reiki is a passive experience. You do not need to do anything. You will naturally begin to feel relaxed as the energy moves within your body. Since Reiki is subjective to the individual, each client’s experience will be unique and may vary from session to session.
