Dream a Little Dream
Have you ever woken up wishing you could remember that incredible dream, or longed to take control of the magical worlds your mind conjures at night? Well, my dreamy friends, there may be an herbal ally waiting to usher you into a more vivid and lucid dreamscape: mugwort. It is important to note that there is a difference between lucid dreams and vivid dreams. Vivid dreams are like watching a movie where our belief is suspended, and we become fully immersed in dream as if it were real. Lucid dreaming, however, is more powerful. In a lucid dream state, you are asleep but aware that you are dreaming, and it is possible to even control your dreams if you learn how to do that. I am still trying! I do know someone who can do this, so it is not an exaggeration or falsehood.
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a plant with a rich history in traditional medicine, particularly known for its connection to the realm of dreams. It is in the Asteraceae plant family, which includes daises. Often referred to as a “dream herb/weed” or “oneirogen” (a fancy term for dream-inducing substances), mugwort has been used for centuries to enhance dream recall, enhance dreamscapes, and even promote lucid dreaming, where you become aware you’re dreaming and can influence the narrative as described above.
So, how does this fascinating herb work its magic?
The science behind mugwort’s oneiric (dream) effects is still being explored. However, some theories suggest it might influence the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays a role in memory and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, the stage when dreaming is most prominent.
But how do you use mugwort to explore your dreams?
There are several ways to incorporate mugwort into your dream routine:
- Mugwort Tea: This is a classic and gentle method. Steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried mugwort in hot water for 10 minutes, strain, and sip before bed. Tea is wonderful in an of itself, but if you are like me, you may want to alleviate bathroom trips in the middle of the night, which disrupt sleep. If this is the case for you, try using a tincture instead.
- Tincture: For a more concentrated dose, you can create a mugwort tincture by steeping the herb in high-proof alcohol for several weeks. Consult a herbalist for proper preparation and dosage.
- Dream Pillow: Stuff a pillow with dried mugwort alongside other dream-promoting herbs like lavender or chamomile. The subtle scent can ease you into slumber and potentially enhance your dreams.
- Smudge Stick: Mugwort is associated with divination and dreaming, so if you like to meditate, making or purchasing a smudge stick made from mugwort can be an alternative to consuming the herb.
Make Your Own Smudge Stick:
What you’ll need:
- Mugwort: Freshly harvested or dried mugwort leaves and stems.
- Twine: Natural twine like cotton or hemp is ideal.
- Scissors
- (Optional) Shears: If using fresh mugwort with thicker stems.
- (Optional) Additional herbs: You can incorporate other dream-promoting herbs like lavender or chamomile into your smudge stick.
Instructions:
- Harvesting or Selecting Mugwort:
- If using fresh mugwort, harvest it just before the flower buds open for maximum potency. Choose clean, unpolluted areas.
- Dried mugwort is readily available in herbal shops.
- Preparing the Mugwort:
- Fresh: Wash the mugwort gently and pat it dry. If using thicker stems, cut them into manageable lengths with shears.
- Dried: Gently loosen the dried mugwort to remove any debris.
- Creating the Bundle:
- Lay several mugwort stalks (or a mix of herbs) together, forming a loose bunch.
- Aim for a thickness that’s comfortable to hold.
- Securing the Bundle:
- Tie the twine securely around the base of the herb bundle.
- Start wrapping the twine spirally upwards, pulling taut as you go to create a firm hold.
- Repeat the wrapping process several times, ensuring the bundle is stable.
- Shaping and Finishing:
- You can trim the excess mugwort at the top for a neater look or leave it natural.
- Create a crisscross pattern with the twine at the top for a more decorative touch (optional).
- Drying:
- Hang the smudge stick in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. A cool attic or shed is perfect.
- Fresh mugwort smudge sticks will take several weeks to dry completely. Dried mugwort bundles will only need a few days to cure.
Using Your Mugwort Smudge Stick:
- Light the end of the smudge stick with a match or lighter, letting it burn for a moment before gently blowing out the flame.
- Allow the smudge stick to smolder, releasing the fragrant smoke.
- Gently waft the smoke around the space you wish to cleanse, focusing on your intentions.
- Always place the smudge stick in a heat-resistant container like a bowl filled with sand or a seashell after use to extinguish it completely.
Safety Precautions:
- Never leave a burning smudge stick unattended.
- Ensure proper ventilation when using a smudge stick indoors.
- Be mindful of allergies or sensitivities to mugwort smoke especially children and animals.
Important Cautions:
- Talk to your doctor first: Mugwort can interact with certain medications. It’s also not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or if you have liver issues.
- Start low, go slow: Begin with a small amount of mugwort and gradually increase if needed.
- Listen to your body: Discontinue use if you experience any side effects like dizziness or stomach upset.
- Moderation is key: mugwort is not intended to be used every day for long periods of time. Experiment and see how your body responds to mugwort. Use it when you are trying to experience vivid or lucid dreams. I encourage you to keep a dream journal, so you can compare your dreams while using mugwort versus not using it.
Exploring the depths of your dreams can be a profound and enriching experience. With mugwort as a potential guide, you might unlock a world of vivid imagery, self-discovery, and even a touch of magic in your nighttime adventures.
